The Ultimate Guide to Golf Course Etiquette: Play The Right Way

Upholding proper golf course etiquette is more than just avoiding the obvious no-no’s—like talking loudly or walking across someone’s line.

The Apes Hill Etiquette Guide

A round of golf is about shared enjoyment, where skill meets camaraderie, and respect is as important as your swing. Of which a little goes a long way. Upholding proper golf course etiquette is more than just avoiding the obvious no-no’s—like talking loudly or walking across someone’s line. It’s about creating an atmosphere that means everyone can enjoy the experience to the fullest.

At Apes Hill, we believe in fostering an environment where all golfers—whether seasoned pros or first-time players—can relax, connect with friends, and revel in the beauty of the course. It’s a place where fun is the top priority, and the spirit of the game comes alive in every round. By caring for the course and each other, we look after the integrity of the game, ensuring no one feels excluded and it can be enjoyed for generations to come.

So whether you’re working on your handicap or simply enjoying the outdoors with old and new friends, remember: even if you’re not the most “tee-rific” golfer, you can always be the most respectful!

Rule 1: Respect the Course

When it comes to golf etiquette, one of the first—and most important—ways to show respect is by taking care of the course itself. After all, without the fairways, greens, and bunkers, you don’t really have a game.

Why it matters?

  • Maintains the quality of the course: Proper golf course etiquette ensures that the course remains in its prime condition, giving everyone the opportunity to enjoy it at its best.
  • Supports efforts of the team: The hardworking grounds crew dedicates countless hours to keeping the course in immaculate shape. By respecting the course, you’re also thanking their efforts.
  • Promoting fair play: Treating the course with respect minimises wear and tear on key areas like greens, tees, and fairways, which helps keep the game fair for all players. No cheating allowed here!
  • Enhances your rounds: A well-maintained course enhances every round, providing a smoother and more competitive game.

How to do it:

  • Repair divots & ball marks: Use a divot tool or tee to fix any divots or ball marks you create.
  • Rake bunkers properly: After a bunker shot, always rake the sand to leave it smooth, level, and free of footprints. Imagine how you'd want the bunker to look when you next step in— a simple act of courtesy.
  • Follow cart path rules: Respect the course's cart path regulations. Keep carts on designated paths and avoid driving over sensitive areas like greens or tee boxes. If you’re not certain of the rules, be sure to check with the golf shop before you play.

Rule 2: Be Considerate of Fellow Golfers

Golf isn’t just about who’s got the best swing or the lowest score—it’s about shared moments, friendly competition, and camaraderie. Whether you’re playing with old friends or new faces, show consideration for others on the course. After all, a good round of golf is as much about socialising as it is about scoring birdies.

Here’s how to keep things fun, fair, and friendly:
  • Keep the game moving: Be ready to hit your shot and allow faster groups to play through if needed.
  • Stay quiet and still: Avoid making noise or movement when others are taking their shots.
  • Be mindful of space: Stand clear of other players’ swings and avoid walking in their putting lines on the green.
  • Respect tee times: Arrive early to avoid delays and keep the course running smoothly. Plus, it gives you a chance to warm up and get into the groove.

It’s all about striking the right balance between having fun and being respectful—whether it’s letting someone take their shot in peace or offering a friendly nod when you’re stepping aside. A little courtesy goes a long way.

Rule 3: Dress the Part

While golf fashion may have evolved over the years, there's still something undeniably timeless about dressing appropriately for the game. Whether you’re sporting a classic collared shirt, well-tailored pants, or comfortable yet respectful footwear, the right attire sets the tone for an enjoyable, dignified day on the course.

  • Know the dress code: Familiarise yourself with the course’s guidelines to ensure you’re appropriately dressed. It’s always a good idea to check ahead or pop into the Pro Shop to make sure you’re ready to tee off in style.
  • Choose classic golf attire: Embrace the classic golf look with a collared shirt, tailored shorts or pants, and golf shoes. It’s a nod to the tradition of the sport, and you’ll look sharp while doing it!
  • Prioritise comfort and function: Golf is a game that requires freedom of movement, so choose breathable fabrics that allow for ease of play. Lightweight, moisture-wicking materials are perfect for staying cool and comfortable, while sun protection is always a priority.

Rule 4: Mind Your On-Course Manners

From keeping your phone on silent to waiting for the right moment to chat, being mindful of your surroundings ensures that everyone can enjoy their game without distractions.
Here’s how to mind your manners and keep the course an enjoyable place for everyone:

  • Mark your ball: Use a coin or marker to avoid interference with other players’ putting lines.
  • Avoid walking in another’s line: Be mindful of your foot placement, especially on the green.
  • Prioritise safety: Golf is a game of precision, but sometimes even the best players can miss their mark. Always wait until others are well out of range before you take your swing, and if your ball strays toward another player, make sure to shout “fore!” to alert them.
  • A recent change to the rules means you now have only 3 minutes (down from 5) to search for a lost ball before it’s officially deemed out of play. Being aware of this new rule will help to avoid unnecessary delays.

Rule 5: End Your Round with Grace

Just as how you start your round sets the tone, how you finish says just as much about you. Whether you’ve had a round full of hole-in-ones or faced a few challenges, end your game with grace, a smile, and a handshake.
Here’s how to end your round like a true golfer:

  • Take the time to clean up after yourself, return your equipment to its proper place, and leave the course as you found it—respectfully.
  • Thank your caddie or staff & acknowledge those who’ve enhanced your experience with a kind word.
  • Socialise with fellow players: The 19th hole isn’t just about celebrating a great round—it’s a chance to unwind, connect, and enjoy the camaraderie of the game. Whether you’re enjoying a post-round drink or meal, take the time to chat with your playing partners and other golfers. You might even discover new friendships and shared experiences that extend beyond the course.

The best golf etiquette? Sharing your love for the game by returning for another round! Whether you're eager to perfect your swing, enjoy the company of fellow golfers, or simply soak in the beauty of the course, there's always something new to experience at Apes Hill.
