Hole One

Par 4

416 yards

"Uphill about 20 yards, and 20 yards into the wind, so it plays about 450 yards. Two bunkers lurk down the right-hand side of the fairway. A clever design at Apes Hill is that you can see every green from the tee and that is the case here. The hole doglegs left-to-right. For me it is a drive and 6-iron into the green. Safe to miss on the left, but from there the green is very fast. There is a bunker at the front, which is also not a bad miss."

Hole Two

Par 4

255 yards

arrow icon

"A risk-and-reward par 4 that is drivable if you want to take it on – although you will need to give it your very best! The reward is obvious, but the risk comes with a bunker at the back-right of the green with a water hazard down the left of the fairway, which finishes about 50 yards short of the green. I will always go for it, because I feel I can still get it up and down for par after taking a drop if I go in the water."

Hole Three

Par 4

415 yards

arrow icon

"Again, this hole plays straight into the wind. The fairway slopes left to right. Two bunkers lurk on the right-hand side of the fairway so it is best to aim left-middle of fairway then it will bounce into the middle. The green is long and narrow, so it is all about controlling your ball. There is a hollow down the left off the green, which can leave you with a tricky up-and-down."

Hole Four

Par 4

441 yards

arrow icon

"This is a fantastic hole - and its elevated tee serves up some great views. The best drives will be fired down the left side of the fairway. There is quite a steep bank leading up to the green, so the approach is tricky. Just do not go too far right from the tee; it is lost ball territory with a steep drop there. There is a big deep trap on the right-hand side of the green."

Hole Five

Par 3

185 yards

arrow icon

"This is a lovely hole. Everything lies in front of you and with the elevated tee – and playing downwind - you need to take about 20 yards off your tee shot. Bunkers line the left of the green with rocks on the right. The bunkers are not the worst place to miss but any further left and you might find a water hazard."

Hole Six

Par 5

638 yards

arrow icon

"This plays 638 yards from the back tees, so is a bit of a monster – but the different teeing options make it playable for all. The hole sweeps right to left again, and if you are attacking the green in two, anything that misses right will leave a devilish chip back up onto the putting surface. For lay-ups, it is best to play down the left side of the fairway. A birdie opportunity but you can easily walk away with a six."

Hole Seven

Par 4

405 yards

arrow icon

"This is a tough hole, but a lovely dogleg right-to-left par 4, and driver is not always the best option from the tee. The approach shot is tricky as the green is protected with a bunker at the front, and more sand lurks at the rear of the green. Best angle for the approach is from the right and if the pin is at the back of the green you need to be wary of that sand."

Hole Eight

Par 3

163 yards

arrow icon

"A lovely little par 3 that plays slightly downhill. You will be facing a crosswind on this hole, right to left. A good opportunity for a birdie. There is a slope on the right-hand side of the green which you can use to kill the ball a little if the pin is on that side. But if you are too short front left, the ball will roll straight off the green."

Hole Nine

Par 5

564 yards

arrow icon

"A downwind par 5. Bunkers lurk on the right at about 300 yards, so you need to avoid those. If going for the green in two, more traps lie in wait short of the putting surface so you could lay up short (short right of the green) of those and leave yourself a 100-yard pitch shot in. Beware, water lurks on the left-hand side from about 100 yards in, going round to the back of the green. A good opportunity for a birdie or even eagle."

Hole Ten

Par 4

350 yards

arrow icon

"The back nine kicks off with a very demanding par 4 with that has out-of-bounds left and right – so this is a tough tee shot with a bunker left at about 280 yards. Your approach shot is played to a green that slopes from back to front. There is a bunker at the front of the putting surface and another one to the left."

Hole Eleven

Par 4

365 yards

arrow icon

"If you can keep your tee shot to the right it will usually kick down towards the middle of the fairway. It is not a long hole so a lot rests on the second shot, but you have to be very careful because the one thing you do not want to do here is go long as the putting surface is very small, and it is a really difficult chip coming back down the sloping green."

Hole Twelve

Par 3

225 yards

arrow icon

"One of the most spectacular holes on the golf course as you look straight at the Atlantic Ocean from its elevated tee. It is 225 yards from the back tees, but plays predominantly into the wind, so you can be adding anything up to 20 yards when it comes to club selection. The green slopes left to right and into the back left-hand side. Anything too far left is pretty much dead and there is a bunker lurking on the back right of the green."

Hole Thirteen

Par 4

440 yards

arrow icon

"Another fantastic hole. When the pros are playing it from the back tees it is a fearsome looking par 4 and the best way to play the tee shot is to hit a high fade over the trees that are positioned left of the tee. There are rocks right of the fairway, so you are relying on a bit of luck if you are heading that way. The second shot is very tough with a long bunker running down the left of the green with a drop down a ravine. A tough hole but one of my favourites."

Hole Fourteen

Par 4

arrow icon

"You have views of the Atlantic all down the left side of the fairway. The hole sweeps down and right to left. Anything too far left and you are in serious trouble in the palm trees, but anything in the middle of the fairway leaves you a second shot uphill. Again, the secret here is not to go long because it is a devilish little chip coming back."

Hole Fifteen

Par 4

360 yards

arrow icon

"It is best to keep your tee shot down the right-hand side as there are three bunkers left. If you hit a really good drive, you can score well here, but you need to beware with the approach shot as the green runs away from you and is quite firm. You do not want to miss it right though as your ball with roll down a steep bank."

Hole Sixteen

Par 3

235 yards

arrow icon

"‘The Cave Hole’ and a visually stunning par 3. A new tee sees this hole playing 235 yards, slightly downwind, and for me that is a four-iron. Obviously, the big test for most who play this hole is to carry the water, but then you have to stop your ball on the green, which is quite shallow. The crosswinds can help you here a little, but you just have to commit to the shot!"

Hole Seventeen

Par 4

365 yards

arrow icon

"A fun hole with its double fairway, so you can just let it go from the tee. The longer hitters will aim left and try to carry a bunker that is out there at around 290 yards. The really long hitters will be eyeing up the green from the tee but again, you need to be careful because if you get too close to the green it is a very tricky pitch with the putting surface running away from you. A long iron and a wedge is not the worst option."

Hole Eighteen

Par 5

638 yards

arrow icon

"A spectacular finishing hole that sweeps downhill. A bunker will come into play at about 280 yards on the right-hand side, but as you are playing downhill it is very reachable and the longer hitters will be looking to clear it. Beware though, anything too far right and it is a potential lost ball. It is risk-and-reward because if you are attacking the green, there is a ravine which is out-of-bounds. A lay-up and a wedge is a smart play."
