Member Interview: Douglas Craig
For Douglas Craig and his family, Apes Hill Barbados is a place where time slows, and life’s best moments unfold, whether it’s on the fairways, by the pool, or simply embracing the island’s beauty.
What made you choose Apes Hill Barbados?
We were members of the previous ownership and always thought the set up was unique and private, with beautiful island views.
Apes Hill Barbados was acquired and redeveloped a few years back, what are your thoughts about the newly designed golf courses and amenities?
Under the new ownership, the course has been transformed beyond recognition. It is no longer a resort course but an exclusive vibrant living community reflecting serious investment and strong leadership.
What are your favourite things about being a part of this community?
It's got everything you need to offer in one area, from golf to nature trails and padel tennis to fantastic restaurants and gym facilities. There’s even a golf pro shop.
How does Apes Hill Barbados accommodate and enhance your family's multi-generational lifestyle?
The Courtyard Villa we have is ideal for use by our children and grandchildren and provides a longevity of lifestyle second to none.
How does the golf course compare to others you have played?
The golf course is unique as each hole has its own character with 3 holes resembling Jurassic park with spectacular views over both oceans at once.
Do you have a favourite hole or area of the golf course?
Fingels Cave is what I call the 16th par 3 over water, and it’s the most challenging and my favourite. Although the 12th par 3 is the most memorable as my elder son got his 3rd hole in one there this year!
Have you used the Performance Centre, and if so, what is your favourite aspect?
My favourite aspect of the performance centre is one of the first indoor laser directed putting experiences which simulates the real thing. The amazing staff make all the difference too.
What’s your go-to meal at the 20th Hole after a round of golf?
As my daughter and I like to start early in the day, the 20th hole provides a welcome pre-ordered halfway breakfast to provide length to your drives.
What are your thoughts on the in-villa dining options available at the resort, and when would you use this?
After a busy day with the variety of activities, it’s relaxing to spend time with your family and friends with an excellent choice of delivered dining options for all tastes and diets.
What makes Barbados the ideal place to retire to?
Barbados is ideal to retire to as it has a favourable climate all the year round, a low crime rate and political stability. The West Coast is a relatively small coastline and thus there are only so many properties to make your home. The exclusive nature of the area produces a foundation for a great investment and legacy for your family.
What is your favourite thing to do on the island?
My favourite day would be to share Apes Hill with the family, starting with padel tennis and then playing some golf with the children on the nine and the short course and top it off with one of the special BBQ themed musical evenings.
What is your favourite memory at Apes Hill?
My favourite memory is playing in the Legends tournament this year with some of the best Seniors in the World.
What makes Apes Hill special to you?
To summarise, it offers a complete and varied golfing experience in a community that exceeds your expectations and sets itself apart as the best in the Caribbean.
