A Taste of Community at Apes Hill’s Farmers Market Day
The response was overwhelmingly positive. Guests stayed longer than planned, conversations flowed easily, and by the end of the day, many were asking whether it could become a regular fixture. Monthly was suggested. Weekly came up more than once.
The market focused on produce grown right here at Apes Hill. Members and guests were able to browse fresh eggs, honey from the on-site hives, and herbs and vegetables harvested from the land.
A small selection was laid out on the day, including cucumbers, papaya, plantains, rosemary and sweet peppers. It was a practical way for members to take home healthy, organically grown food, while also connecting more closely with how the land is used and cared for.
Ed, our golf course superintendent and resident sustainability pioneer, and his team were present throughout the morning, answering questions and sharing insight into what is grown on site and how it supports the wider sustainability approach at Apes Hill. For many members, there was a sense of pride in seeing the land nurtured and shared so openly.
A fresh coconut station proved to be one of the most popular elements of the market, drawing a steady stream of people throughout the afternoon.
Alongside the produce, a small group of local makers were invited to take part. They offered handmade items including candles, bath products, body oils and jewellery, all crafted using natural island ingredients.
The selection was intentional. Every vendor was local and chosen for their alignment with Apes Hill’s values around sustainability, craftsmanship and wellbeing. Rather than feeling commercial, the stalls felt personal, with guests taking time to talk with the people behind the products.
The market was designed as a drop-in event, with no formal programme and no pressure to stay. That ease shaped how the day unfolded.
Many members arrived briefly and ended up staying for longer than they intended. Neighbours spent time catching up properly rather than in passing. Guests met others they hadn’t crossed paths with before, and those conversations have continued since.
Families were able to move easily between the stalls and activities. A mini petting zoo with goats and chickens was set up nearby, along with a tractor photo opportunity, a bouncy castle and a craft table.
A golf-themed activity designed for younger children added a familiar Apes Hill touch. Parents were able to browse the market knowing their children were close by, entertained and comfortable. It made the day feel inclusive without being over-structured.
