Mingling with Green Monkeys at Apes Hill Barbados

We’re pleased to be featured in Toronto Sun, where travel writer Wes Gilbertson visits Apes Hill Barbados and finds a golf escape that’s as wild as it is refined.

The article begins with a quiet moment under the saman trees, where a few green monkeys steal the scene. Gilbertson walks the course and reflects on the land’s natural contours and long views in both directions across the island. With 27 holes, dramatic elevation changes and a rich sense of place, he captures how Apes Hill feels like a world of its own.

He explores the Championship Course, redesigned by Ron Kirby, and singles out two standout holes: the dramatic 16th framed by a coral cave, and the 12th with its Atlantic Ocean backdrop and crisp, fresh air. The 19th hole island green and Little Apes par-3 course both earn honourable mentions for adding surprise and variety to the round.

"They have made a massive investment in recent years to maximize the potential of what is a special setting."

Gilbertson also experiences life at one of our four-bedroom Hilltop Villas. With floor-to-ceiling glass, an infinity pool and a view stretching from Little Apes to the Caribbean Sea, he describes mornings worth waking early for and evenings spent unwinding with friends after a long day on the fairways.

The article gives space to the stories behind the land, including insights from Director of Golf Jody Addison. From coral-stone bunkers to ancient cave systems, Gilbertson notes the way the course embraces the natural terrain and exposes its history with quiet respect.

He closes by highlighting the ease of moving from golf to the coastline, where our upcoming One Eleven Beach Club will bring a new dimension to the Apes Hill experience. Whether watching hockey on the terrace with friends or spotting monkeys in the distance mid-round, he makes it clear this is a destination with character and charm in equal measure.
