Ian Woosnam at Apes Hill Barbados

We’re honoured to be featured in Top 100 Golf Courses, where golf legend Ian Woosnam shares why Apes Hill Barbados is more than a place to play. It’s a place to belong.

In a wide-ranging interview with Jasper Miners, Woosnam reflects on a career that includes a Masters title, Ryder Cup triumphs and over 50 tournament wins. These days, he calls Apes Hill his home from home, drawn by the island’s climate, community and the sense of freedom found high above the sea.

Woosnam recalls his first visit to the course and how the landscape felt made for golf. He praises the late Ron Kirby for creating a layout that is as enjoyable as it is challenging, with fairways that wind through gullies and fig trees and views across both the Atlantic and Caribbean.

"Every green is visible from the tee. That’s rare. And it’s one of the most enjoyable, scenic courses I’ve ever played."

Former Master Champion & Ryder Cup Captain Ian Woosnam

The article explores Woosnam’s favourite holes, from the risk-reward second to the dramatic 16th known as The Cave. He talks about the clever use of elevation and how the course keeps players engaged from start to finish. It’s golf designed to be played often and enjoyed every time.

Off the course, Woosnam shares what life at Apes Hill looks like. From post-round drinks at The 20th Hole and conversations with members at The Noisy Cricket to quiet evenings taking in the views, it’s a lifestyle that is welcoming, easy and full of charm.

The feature also highlights the wider experience on offer. From the state-of-the-art Performance Centre and Little Apes par three to yoga sessions, Padel courts and hiking trails, there’s always something to enjoy and space to slow down.

As Woosnam puts it, Apes Hill is for everyone. Whether you’re just starting out or playing off scratch, it’s a community built on shared passion, natural beauty and the simple joy of the game.
